The healthiest form of sugar is from whole foods such as fruits and vegetables. These whole-food sugars also come with micronutrients known as fiber, enzymes, complete vitamins, organic minerals, antioxidants and phytochemicals. Both scientific literature and clinical experience show that diets high in fiber, fruits, vegetables and herbal teas significantly reduce the occurrence of host of deadly diseases.
But here is a list of sugars that are the "next best thing" to the sugar in fruits and vegetables. They contain some nutrients, but do still have a fairly high glycemic index:
•Agave nectar—from a cactus-like plant in Mexico.
•Fructose (Levulose)—found in many foods in combination with glucose and galactose such as: honey, tree fruits, berries, melons, beets, sweet potatoes, parsnips and onions.
•Sugar Alcohols—sorbitol, mannitol and xylitol (wood sugar or birch sugar).
•Rice Syrup—from rice and sprouted grains (maltose being the main sugar type).
•Turbinado—raw sugar cane juice that has been dehydrated, colored and then crystallized. Consider it a partially refined sugar.
•Fruit Juice Concentrate—remaining sugar from apples, devoid of most of its fiber, enzymes, vitamins and minerals.
•Date or Kiwi Sugar—made from dehydrated ground dates or kiwis.
•Grade B Maple Syrup (unrefined)—from maple tree sap.
•Unsulphured Molasses—made from the juice of sun-ripened cane, blackstrap molasses is the residue of the cane syrup after the sugar crystals have been separated.
•Sucanat—non-refined cane sugar that hasn’t had the molasses removed from it.
•Rapadura—essentially pure dried sugarcane juice much like sucanat.
•Raw Honey—made by bees and typically only sold in health food stores.
•Stevia—a sweet natural herb powder.

Start Your Year Right with this Simple Cleansing Diet
The Journal of the American Medical Association reported that obesity is a major cause for the lowering of life expectancy among young adults. A correlation was found linking Body-Mass-Index (BMI) to longevity, wherein people with higher BMIs have a bigger chance of having a premature death. An obese 20-year-old white male who stands 5’10” and weighs a whopping 288 pounds has a BMI of greater than 40 is in danger of losing 13 years of his life. This would probably an extreme case but ordinary Americans numbering in the millions have high BMIs resulting to less life expectancy of about three to five years as compared to people with normal BMIs.
As expected, people will consume excessive number of calories during the holidays and this will put more people at risks. However, people can start their year right by following this quick and safe cleansing regimen during and after the holidays:
* Drink lots of water. Get at least eight glasses of water day. You will be surprised at how drinking enough water can prevent several diseases. (I will discuss the benefits of water in later issues).
* Get some fresh air in you. Stretch your legs and go for a brisk walk. Do this daily.
* Don’t get guilty with the indulgences during Christmas and suddenly starve yourself. Just eat normally with have well-balanced meals. Try to avoid nuts and milk chocolate.
* Sleep early. The body has the ability to heal itself and you can induce this by sleeping regularly at the correct times.
* Follow this rule: eat five portions of fruit and vegetable a day. Maximize your intake of antioxidants by mixing colors among fruits and veggies.
Remember, prosperity does not only mean having a fat wallet. It should encompass all aspects of our being – including our health.
Live well and prosper!
